Whether you're planning a vacation, juggling a busy schedule, or just looking for some extra help with your pets, finding the right pet professional can feel overwhelming. With so many options out there, how do you know who to trust? Here’s a simple guide to help you start your search and find a qualified pet care provider you can rely on.
1. Identify Your Specific Need
Start by identifying what kind of help you need. Are you looking for:
A daily dog walker?
A great bath and hair cut?
Help with a new pet that's adjusting to the home?
Help with transportation to vet appointments?
Defining your needs helps narrow your search to professionals who specialize in those services.
2. Ask for Recommendations
Word of mouth is powerful. Ask friends, family, neighbors, or even your veterinarian if they have a trusted pet care provider they recommend. You can also check online neighborhood groups or community boards for suggestions. One Facebook group we love specifically for Houston area dog owners is Houston Dog Moms.
3. Do Your Research
Once you have a few names, take time to look at their websites, social media, and online reviews. Look for indicators of professionalism like:
Insurance and bonding
Background checks for staff
Ongoing training for staff (or themself if they do not have staff)
Experience with various pet types or behavioral issues
A clear and responsive communication process
4. Prioritize Professionalism Over Price
While it might be tempting to go with the cheapest option, your pet deserves more than the bare minimum. Professional pet care providers invest in training, certifications, and proper insurance to give you peace of mind. They treat your pets like family and have plans in place for emergencies. This typically means they are priced higher than some of the other options you will find, however, it is worth it to have the extra protection.
5. Ask the Right Questions
Before booking, be sure to ask all of your questions. Better yet, schedule a time for them to meet you and your pet. We recommend at leas asking these questions:
Are you insured and bonded?
We cannot stress the importance of this enough. It protects you, your pet, and your belongings.
How do you handle emergencies or medical situations?
If their plan does not sound well thought out, you don't want your pet to be the guinea pig.
Do you have a background check or safety screening process for staff?
If the business has staff, you want to know that they are fully vetted to be around your pet. If they do not have staff, you may consider asking the owner if the business if they are willing to go through a background check.
What’s included in each visit or session?
Of course price is important...but what is actually included in that pricing?
How do you communicate with pet parents during services?
Do they use text messages? Send photos? App? Carrier pigeon?
Can you accommodate pets with anxiety, reactivity, or special needs? (If applicable to your pet)
If your pet exhibits severe anxiety, reactivity, or has any special needs, you truly want to find a professional that has experience with whatever your pet experiences.
Do you service my specific area in Houston?
You don't want to find a training facility located in Bunker Hill when you live in West University...unless you are ok with driving further.
How do I book services and how far in advance should I schedule?
If you need a quick & easy booking process for your busy schedule, you will not want to choose a business that takes a few days to process requests.
Have an unpredictable schedule and need last minute services? This will be something to chat about as well.
6. Trust Your Gut
If something feels off, it probably is. You should feel confident, comfortable, and reassured after meeting a pet professional. Your pet’s safety and happiness should always be the top priority.
